Rohan Varma

Founder & Principal Architect, IND

Rohan Varma (b. 1986), graduated as an architect (with first class honours) from Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture (KRVIA) at the University of Mumbai in 2009. After graduation, he worked with the world-renowned architect Charles Correa in Mumbai for two years on several important commissions such as the Champalimaud Centre in Lisbon, the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, the Masterplan for the redesign of Mecca in Saudia Arabia, and the Aga Khan Ismaili Centre in Toronto.

Following this, he taught for a year at the KRVIA where he was mentoring first and second-year students in architecture, interior and graphic design. In 2011, he was awarded the coveted Tata and Mahindra Scholarships to pursue higher studies abroad, subsequently graduating with a Masters in Architecture (with honourable mention) from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands in 2013 under the tutelage of Prof. Dick van Gameren for whom he was also a Student Assistant. In 2014 he was nominated for the Dutch Archiprix Award and his work was subsequently exhibited at several prominent institutions such as The New Institute in Rotterdam and the Stadskantoor in Utrecht.

Between 2013 and 2015, Varma gained further international experience at the Dutch firm Mecanoo Architecten working on several architecture and master planning projects in the Netherlands, Russia, UK and Chile.

In 2015, he established IND, a cross-disciplinary firm based both in Mumbai and Amsterdam engaged in projects across the board from residential interiors, cafes, weekend homes and institutions to larger urban proposals. Parallel to running his private studio, Varma also regularly combines his work as a practising architect with research and has written and presented papers on issues as diverse as public space, urban policies and affordable housing. This was formalised in 2017 through the establishment of The India Studio - the research wing of IND that focuses on issues related to architecture and urbanism in India.

Along with IND, Varma is also a PhD candidate and tutor at the TU Delft researching on affordable housing in India and a co-curator of a travelling exhibition on the housing designs of Charles Correa.
