Cafe in Lower Parel

Located in the former mill district in Mumbai, the brief called for the design of a small cafe that would respond to its context (and its industrial past) as well as echo the clients venture into organic fast food and interest in sustainability. Keeping these in mind, there was a constant focus on the reuse of industrial (and other) materials throughout the design and construction of this space.

This "upcycling" concept is reflected most visibily in the design of the facade which essentially acts as a box that opens up in different ways to reveal its interior. Here, the facade material reuses waste offcuts of corrugated metal sheets from a factory just outside Mumbai. This material is again reused at the far end of the cafe where a shipping container acts as an open kitchen from where customers also collect their food. Another example of reusing materials is showcased in the design of the tables, where old wooden flooring stored in the client's warehouse are given a new life in the form of table tops.

In the rest of the space, existing columns, floors and ceiling slabs of concrete have been given an inexpensive grey cement finish and existing brick walls are painted over white to keep the bare structure minimal and simple.
